Privacy Policy
A plain-English explanation of what ChatVault stores, where it stays, and what it does not do.
What ChatVault does
ChatVault is a privacy-first Chrome extension that helps you save, organise, search, and protect selected insights from ChatGPT conversations in a local browser sidebar.
What data is stored
Depending on how you use ChatVault, the extension may store:
- Insight text you choose to save
- Folders, tags, and notes you add
- Local settings for features such as Privacy Screen and Encrypted Vault Mode
- Backup files you choose to export or import as JSON
ChatVault is designed to store only what you save or configure inside the extension.
Where data is stored
ChatVault stores saved insights locally in your browser using Chrome extension storage. Your insights remain on your device unless you choose to export them or otherwise copy them elsewhere.
No external servers for the MVP
ChatVault does not operate a backend server for the MVP. ChatVault does not send your saved insights to a ChatVault cloud service.
No analytics or telemetry
ChatVault does not intentionally collect analytics or telemetry. This website and the ChatVault MVP are intended to avoid external tracking.
No selling of data
ChatVault does not sell user data.
Permissions
ChatVault may request Chrome extension permissions needed to:
- Run on ChatGPT pages so you can save selected text from conversations
- Store saved insights and settings in local Chrome extension storage
- Provide sidebar, Privacy Screen, and Encrypted Vault Mode features
Permissions are requested so ChatVault can work in your browser. They are not used to operate a ChatVault account system or send your insights to ChatVault servers.
Encrypted Vault Mode
Encrypted local vault mode helps protect saved insights on this device. Your passphrase is not stored by ChatVault. If you forget your passphrase, ChatVault cannot recover your encrypted vault.
JSON export and import
You can export and import JSON backups of your saved insights. Exports are under your control. If you share, upload, or store a backup outside ChatVault, that copy follows wherever you put it. ChatVault cannot manage third-party copies of your backups.
Your responsibility for local device access
Because ChatVault stores data locally, access to your device, browser profile, synced browser data, or exported files may allow access to your saved insights. You are responsible for protecting your device, browser account, passphrase, and backups.
Third-party services
ChatVault is not affiliated with OpenAI or ChatGPT. ChatGPT and related services are operated by their own providers and have their own privacy policies. ChatVault does not control how those services handle your conversations.
Changes to this policy
We may update this privacy policy as ChatVault evolves. When we do, we will update the effective date on this page.
